Masada
One place that is a Must while at the Dead Sea is "Masada" It is about half an hours drive from your chosen hotel and there are plenty of Taxis that will take you there and back for about 20 sheckels each way so sharing would make it quite affordable.
Masada has a chequered history that I could not cover in a web site such as this but basically it was a stronghold built atop a mountain which 960 Jews fled after the Romans invaded Jerusalem they made the stronghold self sufficient and stored enough food and water to last over two years, the water was channeled by ducts and stored in massive "Cisterns" carved out of the rock, the Romans lay seige to Masada and after months of stand off and the realisation they would eventually be taken the jewish people threw themselves off the high clifftops rather than be taken by the roman invaders.
Access to Masada is by cablecar or for the more fit and adventuress there is a pathway carved out of the mountain side to get you to and from the site, whichever way you decide to go take plenty of water............
